4 ways you can discourage burglary

Burglary (\bəːɡləri/) – noun

The illegal entry of a building with intent to commit a crime, especially theft.

Being the victim of a burglary isn’t only inconvenient, it’s also terrifying. It means that someone –a stranger with ill intent, has entered your personal space and property and taken something that is yours.

Not to mention, you’re further inconvenienced by having to contact your insurance company to let them know you’ve been robbed. Filling out police reports is also time consuming and it’s often the last thing you want to be doing when you’re feeling so vulnerable.

That’s why we’ve come up with 4 handy tips to help you deter burglars and dissuade criminals from carrying out other crimes, such as vandalism and arson, or more violent crimes such as murder or sexual assault.

Tip 1: Light up your life

Keeping your home, yard and even your street well-lit is a great way to deter potential robbers. Surrounding your home with strategically placed security and garden lights means there is little to no places a potential criminal can hide.

Ultimately, without the cover of shadows, criminals are often thrown off because there is obviously a much greater chance of them being spotted, even before they get near your home.

Tip 2: Take away temptation

Some people feel they shouldn’t have to change their behaviour in order to stay safe in their own homes. However, this isn’t how the world works.

Sadly, no matter how much we wish crime wasn’t an issue, it is. So much so, that trying to stop it has become part of our society. But, there are things we can do to help – we can actively choose to be aware of what is visible to the public eye.

For instance, don’t let the entire neighbourhood know you’ve just bought a new computer by leaving the packaging out for the world to see on garbage collection day. Nor should you leave any valuables near your windows, where people can see them.

Tip 3: Arm your home

We’ve mentioned this previously in one of our other blogs, These 4 security mistakes could cost you, but we feel it’s so important that we’re going to emphasise this point again: remember to arm and lock up your home – even if you’re just leaving for a few minutes.

Your alarm is one of your most important home security tools you can use. Making sure your home is armed correctly is important not only because it’s a deterrent, but also because if someone should try their luck, you’ll be notified and have the opportunity to get the authorities involved.

Tip 4: Trickery

The lights are on, but nobody’s home…

This is an age-old trick that has stood the test of time. You probably learnt this trick from your mother or even your grandmother – regardless, it works, and it works well.

If you’re not going to be at home and you’re concerned about your security, leave a few lights on and turn on some music or the TV. The lights and the noise will help fool any passersby into thinking you’re at home. Clever, right?
